About Rob Knights
Rob Knights assumes ownership of GAL Golf with a life-long passion for golf and more than 30 years’ experience in the golf industry!
A former golf professional, Rob started his career in 1987 as an assistant Canadian PGA professional at the Cataraqui Golf and Country Club, a private golf facility in Kingston, Ontario. After 3 years developing his golf operations and business skills under the tutelage of respected Canadian PGA head professional Keith Thomas, Rob moved back to his hometown of Ottawa where he spent 5 years teaching at Double Deck Golf Centre with Kevin Haime and further developing his skills and cultivating his passion for teaching golf to all levels of golfers.
In 1995, he joined the TMSI Team as the head professional at the Thunderbird Golf Club and operated a winter golf school in the club’s air-supported sports facility for 5 years. A year later, Rob took on the responsibility of golf professional and general manager at Amberwood Golf and Country Club in Stittsville when TMSI acquired the management contract of that facility. Under Rob’s leadership, TMSI was able to streamline the turf and golf operations at Amberwood, improve the golf course, grow membership and increase revenues, taking the club form an operating deficit to realizing a profit in less than 3 years.
He has also served as the head golf professional at the Canadian Golf and Country Club and successfully operated a multi-facility golf school for 6 years in the National Capital Region.
In 2001, Rob left the golf industry to join the Federal Public Service, working at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for 12 years, before returning to TMSI Sports Management as the Vice President of Golf Operations and Business Development in the fall of 2013. He was reinstated as an amateur golfer in 2005 and has competed in many local, provincial and national championships, winning several club championships, local events, in addition to the 6 professional events he captured during his 15-year professional golf career.
Over the course of his professional career, Rob has gained more than 20 years of management experience specializing in change management and providing leadership during critical transition phases of organizational development, including hiring professional and technical staff, implementing budget reductions, writing business plans, and installing effective management information systems.
With a strong knowledge of both the financial/operational and marketing sides of the golf industry, Rob has been responsible for budgets ranging from $500,000 to more than $2 million at a variety of golf facilities and in the public sector. He has experience in all aspects of financial forecasting, resource allocation, fund management, accounting and controls.
Rob resides in Ottawa and in addition to travelling, golfing and spending time during the winter months in sunny Florida, he trains for and has run 8 marathons, including the Boston (2010) and New York City (2011) marathons.
I joined Gal 6 years ago to meet new people and to golf more on a regular basis. It is wonderful having a regular time to tee off every week with friendly like-minded golfers. Lots of laughs and a really good time each and every week. I’m looking forward to another great season of golf at Cedarhill Golf course.
I joined GAL 10 years ago because I had a difficulty getting someone to play and also suitable tee times. GAL solved all that and provided lessons to boot. In the league, I met women who supported me and my golf endeavors, built my confidence and became good friends. No matter what the age, we played, laughed and ate together while my golf got better and sometimes worse. Every year I look forward to seeing the same friendly faces and meeting others.
I joined GAL 6 years ago – someone from work suggested the organization – so after a little research and a little push from my hubby I joined. GAL provides a great opportunity for all levels of play you do not have to be a scratch golfer to play. You are there to have fun – and that’s what it’s all about. A little exercise, fresh air and chuckles is the ticket! I so look forward to ‘my’ night.
GAL is a wonderful way to ensure that you play golf once a week with companions of your skill level at the course of your choice. It is hassle free golf at its best your reasonable fees are paid up front, lessons are offered, your date and times are arranged for you, you have instant partners, there are activities and prizes arranged for each week, and a final tournament to wind up the season. GAL combines frequent golf with social networking in the most pleasurable way possible.
This year will be my third year with GAL. My involvement has been really fun and an opportunity to make new friends, while enjoying my favourite sport. Interesting social encounters sometime went well beyond the golf course and added nicely to my social life and professional network . As a woman working full time, the Pay as you Play League met my needs. Being able to pick a day of the week as well as a golf course closer to work, made a huge difference.
